I am in full support of Women in Horror Recognition! If it weren't for women in horror films would there be such a demand for them? I say NO! We work very hard to get into character and portray this character the way the writer, filmmaker and director want to see it on film. It has been my experience to witness most women in horror who follow the traditional route of going above and beyond, just to measure up to males. We do deserve recognition and I am so glad that you have put us out there. Thanks very much. And I have even shared a link to this site on my FB Pg. (https://www.facebook.com/actresspriestesskandiranson)

i missed this. i have been framing for four days.
but, of course this is a wonderful idea. most importantly it is a symbol of solidarity, an opportunity to create community and open dialogue and reassure us all that we are not alone in our struggle to be heard above the sea of droning, douchebaggy voices that pervades the genre. and maybe someone will write the story they always wanted to, or start fucking around with some latex, or re-watch old films with new eyes and they'll find a home in this, with us.
it is also a good excuse to throw a party. and because we're pretty.

I've been a film critic for horror cinema for over ten years and I think this is a great idea. Women in horror movies/horror fiction definitely deserve recognition.

I think Julie Taymor's TITUS is the best Shakespeare adaptation of all time for cinema; and TITUS is one of the most deranged, daring, demented and fiendish horror films ever made. I think the fact that Taymor didn't win an Oscar for that movie is a travesty.

And what would King Kong be without Fay Wray? What would Alien be without Ripley? (well we know what it would be, it's crap) What would horror be without the great iconic heroines of Alfred Hitchcock, the Vampire femme fatales who became synonymous with Hammer Films, the stunning Barbra Steele, and all the great female antagonists of the Italian Giallo films; or the female heroines of the 1980s slashers who consistently defeated Freddy, Jason, Chucky and the rest. What would horror be without Barbra who annihilated the 50s era horror scream queen, kicked off her heels, saved herself from the monster and was so convincing in Night of the Living Dead. What would horror be without the struggle between good and evil defined in the performance of Linda Blair in The Exorcist? What would horror be without Shirley Jackson and her incredible Haunting of Hill House; which is still probably the greatest and most influential horror novel of the last one hundred years. Who can forget Mary Shelly, Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, Nancy Collins, etc,

And in the East horror is defined by the female gender, the massively popular Sadako from Ringu and Ju-On's Kayako. The Kuchisake Onna (or Severed Mouth Woman) became so popularized in Asian culture that she created several real-life panics. These female villains in Asian horror, usually were murder victims coming back for revenge, and they defined a whole new era of horror. Their thematic predecessor 'Oiwa' and the White Lady defined an entire genre of ghost-storytelling going back hundreds of years in Japan.

As for Twilight and the 'Horror Chick Flick'; I have no problem with these movies. They're not my taste, but if these young girls can read Twilight and see these kinds of horror movies and are inspired to write their own films, to direct their own movies, to write their own novels; then I don't care if the vampires glitter or if they're made of pixie dust.

Horror only stays relevant by staying in tune with the heart-beat of the culture; and horror can only stay relevant by having as many voices from as many different backgrounds and perspectives as possible.

To eliminate important female figures or a female audience from horror is to destroy horror. It will doom it to stagnation and irrelevance. So it's important to celebrate it.

Twilight isn't my taste of horror film, but that doesn't mean I'm in a position to begrudge other people their taste. That's like enjoying chocolate ice-cream and hating other people because they like vanilla instead. I may not like vanilla, but as long as I have my chocolate, I'm more than inclined to live and let live.

Awesome, long-overdue idea. I have no major problem with how women are represented in horror films perse (other than the boredom factor from having to sit through the same stereotypes constantly), but I do wish there was more diversity and more input from female filmmakers, writers etc. And as a woman who writes and puts on horror-related events I wish those of us behind the scenes would get more acknowledgment and encouragement so that people would stop thinking it's "cute" that I'm a girl who likes horror films and start taking me fucking seriously! I, too, am sick of being a novelty, especially when I know there are a ton of us out there.

I'll totally do an event in recognition, and when you get the website up I'll send you details.
